The Monster in Your Head
The psychology behind mystery-box TV
Have you been watching From on MGM+?
It’s a mystery-box show from the LOST school of television where each season answers one question, but opens 74-1/2 additional plot threads. I am convinced that, at the current rate of progression, we will see George R.R. Martin’s The Winds of Winter before Boyd completes a full sentence.
For four seasons, fans have followed the plight of seemingly average folks on their way somewhere who encounter a large, immovable tree blocking the road. They double back and end up in a small town with monsters who smile while disemboweling; magic trees to the past; a man in yellow enjoys fresh—body temperature fresh—liver; and a population of “normal” folks who ended up here after seeing that tree in the road. The survival rule is simple—don’t go out at night. Escape is a little more complex, and they haven’t figured it out yet.
